Died October 10, 1947, Vancouver, British Columbia. Published since 1973 by UH Manoa, the The Hawai'i Review publishes two literary issues annually, featuring prose, poetry, and artwork by local, national, and foreign students. She was unable to attend high school because of lack of accessibility but she educated herself by reading. Her poem Leaving Vigo was recently nominated for a Forward Prize for a Single Poem by the Limerick-based journal Revival. In 1939 she produced an autobiography, Confessions of an Immigrant�s Daughter which also won a Governor General�s Award.

The women poets of the Harlem Renaissance faced one of the classic American double-binds: they were black, and they were female, during an epoch when the building of an artistic career for anyone of either of those identities was a considerable challenge. In 1961 she was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. One of the trademarks of a tanka (besides the traditional five lines of 5-7-5-7-7 onji -- syllables) is a short poetic statement depicting nature (here it may seem much like something you could call a haiku) which is linked to a designated feeling or emotional attitude of the author.
